To celebrate the 26th edition of MUTEK Festival, this episode explores the idea that sound systems are more than just music machines: they are community lifelines, creating spaces where people come together, free from outside control. We trace the movements where electronic music was born out of communal ritual: early days of Dub and Hip Hop, The Loft, Detroit Techno, Chicago's Warehouse, UK Free Parties, Jungle, D&B, Berlin Dub Techno, Dubstep, Garage, culminating in MUTEK’s experimental frontiers. The sound system is a band where crew, artists, audience, and loudspeakers perform as a collective musical instrument, the living space of communal sonic expression.
